Mohsin speaks about his journey south…19th February 2010

Mark speaks to Mohsin about coping with life onboard and how he is helping Mohammed to increase his sailing skills.
Mark Covell
Are you enjoying the chance to stop at the destinations on this event? Your last Round The World trip was non-stop?
Mohsin
Yes, very much enjoying it. It was a shame not to see the World on land, only by sea. Sailing non-stop was amazing but to meet the people of our closest nations has been good. I look forward to going to the Maldives again. South Africa is next.
MC
What are you learning on this trip that you didn’t on the last one?
Mohsin
I have taken on more responsibilities and tasks. I feel more confident around the boat the more I sail. This boat is bigger and faster and the sheet loads are higher. Sailing with different people I learn different things and experiences.
MC
How are you helping Mohammed with learning to become a good sailor?
Mohsin
I can explain and translate things in Arabic to help him learn quicker. His English is good but I can help this way. I also helped him to understand what he should expect at sea on this trip. I told him what to bring and how to cope and how to pray.
MC
There is a big storm ahead of us with 100 mph winds. What’s the most wind you have sailed in, and what was it like?
Mohsin
I saw 51 knots just after sailing through the Cook Straits, between the North and South Islands of New Zealand.
There were huge waves and everything was moving quickly with big water on the deck. I was a little scared. I am glad we are working on missing the worst of the storm ahead.
MC
If you could send a message to your fellow Omanis back home, what would you say right now?
Mohsin
“I am again at sea, going to make something great for Oman and I want you to follow me and your Omani heritage.”
